John Player & Sons sponsored the Formula One racing team Team Lotus from 1968. Initially, the team was sponsored by Player's Gold Leaf brand and raced in the colours of white,red and gold. This brand was replaced as sponsor of Team Lotus in 1971 by John Player Special, when the racing cars began to be decorated in the brand's iconic black and gold colours. Player's continued to sponsor Team lotus until 1987, with a brief break from sponsoring Formula One between 1978 and 1981.
